OUR BELIEFS

United Methodists make up the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States and, together with other Methodist traditions, constitute the largest single Protestant group in Indianapolis.  Methodists were among the earlier settlers of the city and they quickly made their mark as a people of love and service.  The first public library, fire bell, and town clock in the city were housed in a Methodist Church.  Methodists started several of the first schools in the area as well as Methodist Hospital and the University of Indianapolis.  Today, many local United Methodist churches provide day care centers, soup kitchens, food pantries, youth recreation and mentoring programs, adult literacy training and senior citizen services.  According to the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis, Methodists “helped lay the foundations of Indianapolis community life and have helped guide its development.  Religiously and socially, Methodism continues to play a major role in Indianapolis.”

United Methodists hold to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. Like our denomination, North Church strives to live as a people of “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.”  We regard the scriptures as an authoritative guide for faithful living while also valuing an embracing a life of reason and intellectual curiosity.  We ask questions, wrestle with difficult issues, and encourage one another to remain at the table even when we do not agree.

The Methodist tradition is known for am emphasis on a personal faith, lived out in practical and social ways.  We value well-informed and passionate preaching, worship that appeals to the mind and heart, and small groups where people can grow in faith.
